People Watching is about a writing group getting together in a park on Australia Day and trying to put together a youth magazine. TJ, Meg, Oliver, Raj, Briony and Samsonfish can barely get through the matters arising before conversations about Australia Day turn into arguments about terrorism and refugees, sex and power, government and media. Raj thinks Australia Day is politically complicated, TJ thinks Oliver is an arsemonkey, and Meg thinks Oliver's car metaphor is getting a teensy bit laboured. Up the hill, the entire shambles is dissected from start to finish by two nameless voyeurs with their eyes on the deadline, who find sexy secrets in conversations, a garden of Eden on the tram, and flaws in the ideals of democracy.
